This list is my own personal list and are my own opinions. I quite enjoy Slice of Life anime and I would say out of everything I watch, I watch Romance and Slice of Life the most. This list was actually very hard for me to make because there are so many fantastic Slice of Life anime but hope you enjoy this list!
5. Amaama to Inazuma (Sweetness & Lightning) (2016)
Sweetness & Lightning are one of those series I was very excited for while watching seasonal anime. This series was honestly so much better then I expected. With a great sound track, beautiful art, and a very cute story this series honestly blew me away. If you are looking for a very chilled out and cute watch check this one out. It is a very sweet slice of life about a father and daughter and there struggle to become closer as a family.
Since the death of his wife, Kouhei Inuzuka has been caring for his young daughter Tsumugi to the best of his abilities. However, with his lack of culinary knowledge and his busy job as a teacher, he is left relying on ready-made meals from convenience stores to feed the little girl. Frustrated at his own incapability to provide a fresh, nutritious meal for his daughter, Kouhei takes up an offer from his student, Kotori Iida, to come have dinner at her family’s restaurant. But on their very first visit, the father and daughter discover that the restaurant is often closed due to Kotori’s mother being away for work and that Kotori often eats alone. After much pleading from his pupil, Kouhei decides to continue to go to the restaurant with Tsumugi to cook and share delicious homemade food with Kotori.
4. Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop) (2011)
Usagi Drop is one of those series I wanted to watch for a very long time and just never got to it. But when I did wow was I surprised. The whole feel of the anime really fit from the soundtrack, simplistic art style, and heart warming story. This is one of those series that is short but sweet with only 11 episodes it is a bit shorter then your typical anime. But do not let it fool you it has a very full story that has you stuck watching from the first episode. For a slice of life anime I have to say I was very entertained a lot more than most slice of life anime.
Daikichi Kawachi is a 30-year-old bachelor working a respectable job but otherwise wandering aimlessly through life. When his grandfather suddenly passes away, he returns to the family home to pay his respects. Upon arriving at the house, he meets a mysterious young girl named Rin who, to Daikichi’s astonishment, is his grandfather’s illegitimate daughter!
The shy and unapproachable girl is deemed an embarrassment to the family, and finds herself ostracized by her father’s relatives, all of them refusing to take care of her in the wake of his death. Daikichi, angered by their coldness towards Rin, announces that he will take her in—despite the fact that he is a young, single man with no prior childcare experience.
3. Mushishi (2005)
Mushishi is one of those masterpieces I saw very early on and came across one of those anime I will never forget. Mushishi just has this amazing chilled out vibe throughout this series but still some how sucks you in and has you entertained the whole way through. Mushi are beings in which are the most basic forms of life. Ginko goes around and studies these Mushi. This is one of those must watch anime for sure!
“Mushi”: the most basic forms of life in the world. They exist without any goals or purposes aside from simply “being.” They are beyond the shackles of the words “good” and “evil.” Mushi can exist in countless forms and are capable of mimicking things from the natural world such as plants, diseases, and even phenomena like rainbows.
This is, however, just a vague definition of these entities that inhabit the vibrant world of Mushishi, as to even call them a form of life would be an oversimplification. Detailed information on Mushi is scarce because the majority of humans are unaware of their existence.
So what are Mushi and why do they exist? This is the question that a “Mushishi,” Ginko, ponders constantly. Mushishi are those who research Mushi in hopes of understanding their place in the world’s hierarchy of life.
2. Tamako Market/Tamako Love Story (2013)
Tamako Market is one of those sweet slice of life series with hints of romance (which later are stronger in the movie Tamako Love Story.) In this series you follow Tamako in the Usagiyama Shopping District where she grew up a long side her childhood friend Mochizou. This is one of those sweet and funny series you just have to watch to understand. You will fall in love with the characters and the interesting story they are in.
Inside the Usagiyama Shopping District lies an eccentric but close-knit community of business owners. Tamako Kitashirakawa, a clumsy though adorable teenage girl, belongs to a family of mochi bakers who own a quaint shop called Tama-ya. One day, Tamako stumbles upon a talking bird that presents himself as royalty from a distant land. Dera Mochimazzi, as he calls himself, states that he’s seeking a bride for his country’s prince. Intent on his mission, Dera follows Tamako home and develops an addiction to mochi, becoming painfully overweight and subsequently unable to fly back to his homeland; thus, he takes up residence with Tamako’s family and becomes the community’s beloved mascot.
1. Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari (Poco’s Udon World) (2016)
Poco’s Udon World is one I came across not really expecting much while watching seasonal anime. But came to be surprised by the interesting twist to a slightly normal scenario in slice of life anime. This made me come to adore Poco and Souta our main characters and there relationship. That far exceeded all relationships on the list just because of how special it really was. This is a must watch you can’t miss out on this one!
Souta Tawara is a web designer working in Tokyo. When he visits his family’s Udon place in his hometown Kagawa Prefecture, he discovers a young boy. Upon confronting the boy, Souta soon learns his secret and decides to quit his job in order to take care of the boy, Poko. The daily adventures of the two slowly enfold as Poco energetically navigates his way through Kagawa, the “Udon Kingdom,” along with Souta.
