Ever since the Age Of Manga started in the 1940’s there has been multiple manga published, but most of them don’t ever see an Anime adaption. I’ve compiled a list of manga that I think personally deserve to get Anime adaptions, because they are either great stories or their art style is amazing and could translate really well on to the TV screen.
Note – The Manga listed aren’t in any particular ranking in terms of importance, in many ways most of them deserve to get an Anime equally in my view. I also decided to do a separate list of Manhwa.
#10 – Vinland Saga ヴィンランド･サガ (2005 – Present)
As a Scandinavian I am usually drawn into Folklore, history and stories regarding Northern Europe and I guess European myths in general. Vinland Saga feels a lot like Vagabond and Berserk a dark & gritty manga with a great story & setting. (By Makoto Yukimura)
Premise – Vinland Saga is set in England starting in 1013 AD, the year in which the Danish King Sweyn Forkbeard conquered most of it. As King Sweyn nears death, his sons, Prince Harald and Prince Canute, are arguing over his succession. The story draws elements from historical accounts of the period such as The Flateyjarbók, The Saga of the Greenlanders and The Saga of Eric the Red.
#9 – Blazer Drive ブレイザードライブ (2008 – 2010)
Seishi Kishimoto a older brother who has stayed a long time under his brother Masashi’s shadow has also created a good collection of manga such as 666 Satan, Sukedachi 09, and Kurenai no Ōkami to Ashikase no Hitsuji. Sadly none of his work has been yet to be adapted into an anime, outside Blazer Drive getting a Nintendo DS game.
Blazer Drive is a very interesting shounen with unique concepts that totally could translate really well into an anime. (By Seishi Kishimoto)
Taking place in a futuristic style of Tokyo, Japan. Society has harnessed the power of the elements into items known as “Mystickers” which give off various effects depending on which is used and can be applied to everyday housework or even combat. Daichi, our main hero is a young teen that resents his older brother but finds comfort in his dealings with friends. After an encounter with some bullies Daichi discovers he has the potential to become a Blazer, people who are able to apply these “Mystickers” unto their skin without causing harm to their own bodies. It isn’t after another deadly encounter with an unknown assailant of an organization that’s targeting him that Daichi learns of his fate and that of his brother.
#8 – Übel Blatt ユーベルブラット (2004 – Present)
As you may have noticed already on this list I have an interest in Dark Fantasy and manga that don’t really censor themselves when it comes to death, sex, or vulgar language.
The Manga has run a long time already and a lot of things have happened since the beginning, it would be a great fantasy manga to adapt since there is so much material to adapt. (By Etorouji Shiono)
The story tells on how Koinzell, then named Ascheriit, was a young, prodigious swordsman whose skill granted him the fabled title of Blatt Meister (“Blade Master”). His deeds made him one of the fourteen chosen by the ruling emperor of the Empire of Szaalenden to venture into a dangerous quest to defeat a powerful enemy invader known as the evil nation of Wischtech, of whom the many powerful engines of destruction and dark sorcery made a dangerous foe.
Each armed with a lance blessed by the Emperor himself, and thus known as the Fourteen Lances, the chosen traveled far into the enemy’s wasted landscape, losing three of their ranks to the perils of the land, until they arrived into a forest where seven of the eleven remaining decided to forfeit their mission, fearing for their lives. Nevertheless, Ascheriit and three of those still bent on following the Emperor’s will continued, and incredibly succeeded in their deed, returning victorious. It was then that the seven who abandoned the mission ambushed their comrades and massacred them.
#7 – AREA D 異能領域 (2012 – 2016)
We have seen a couple Prison Anime in the past, one being Deadman Wonderland that is somewhat similar to AREA D, in terms of people being put into a prison for no reason & having some people with supernatural abilities. One of the strongest points of this manga is its beautiful art style and also the fights are pretty in depth and not just watered down random Shounen Power Up’s. (By Kyoichi Nanatsuki)
The “prison survival action” story is set after the sudden emergence of special powers in certain pockets of humanity. To deal with these so-called “Altered,” a mysterious remote island prison named “Area D” was built.
#6 – Psyren サイレン- (2007 – 2010)
When I looked at other peoples list Psyren was probably the one that popped out the most in other lists. A rather decent Shounen manga that ran on Weekly Shonen Jump, didn’t really get as popular as some of the others, but still gathered a loyal fan-base who are wishing to see Psyren Anime still to this day.
Ageha Yoshina is a self-confident high school student who helps others for a fee. On his way back from a job, he finds a strange calling card with the word “Psyren” imprinted left behind in a phone booth and decides to keep it, unaware of its purpose. The very next day, Ageha discovers that his classmate Sakurako Amamiya has the exact same calling card in her possession. When he questions her, Sakurako asks him to save her, signaling the day his troubles begin.
#5 – Saru Lock 猿ロック (2004 – 2009)
This is a bit of an interesting case since it has been adapted into a Live-action series and a Movie, but never into an Anime. I’m not a big guy on Ecchi in general, but this was also a very entertaining one at the same time. (By Naoki Serizawa)
Yataro Sarumaru, nicknamed “Saru”, is an average high school boy who daydreams about idols but otherwise has no luck with girls. While working with his father, a locksmith in Asakusa, Tokyo, he has gained exceptional skills to pick just about any lock. Using his exceptional skills, Yataro then finds himself solving various mysterious cases, while also trying his luck with the girls.
#4 – Fire Force 炎炎ノ消防隊 (2015 – Present)
After Atsushi was done with Soul Eater he started his new manga called Fire Force, which is a very interesting take into Firemen and the Fire Department, mixing elements of real life with the supernatural. As always Atsushi is very a artistic person and his level of detail in his manga is just amazing.
Right now it may be too early to adapt, since there isn’t that much material out yet, but give it a year or two and I can see them come up with something decent. (By Atsushi Ōkubo)
Year 198 of the Solar Era in Tokyo, special fire brigades are fighting against a phenomenon called spontaneous human combustion where humans are turned without explanation into flame people called “Infernals”. Shinra Kusakabe aka. Devil’s Footprints with the ability to ignite his feet at will, joins the Special Fire Force Company 8 to fight the Infernals and uncover the truth behind a mysterious fire that caused the death of his family twelve years ago.
#3 – Defense Devil (2009 – 2011)
Once again a manga that has an amazing art style – Defense Devil is a adaption of a classic Angels & Devils setting, but doesn’t make it too cliche compared to other ones I’ve seen in the past. (By Yoon In-Wan)
Mephisto Bart Kucabara is a devil lawyer. In order to return to the demon world that he was exiled from, he needs to collect enough Dark Matter. To do so, he creates a plan to claim the Dark Matter from the souls of sinners sentenced to hell; prove the soul’s innocence and the Dark Matter becomes his.
But how can he gather enough Dark Matter when his kind personality causes him to continually use it up in order to defend the soul from the Shinigami that has come to take them to hell?
#2 – Kaitai Shinsho Ø 怪体真書 (2010 – 2011)
A bit of a different type of Shounen Manga – great art style, good story and interesting take on medicine & unorthodox magic. Short lived yet still a great series. (By Chiyo Kenmotsu)
A Byouma is a medical weapon created by ancient sorcerers to kill the infected or those around the infected and make it look like an illness. Even centuries after the sorcerers have died, these weapons still wander the world, infecting and killing people. Narutaki Soutarou and Izumo Momo are Shadow Doctors, trained to combat these Byouma through unorthodox means. Using magically created anti-Byouma medical equipment, they perform “operations” on the medical weapons to separate them from their hosts and destroy them. Will their special weapons and brilliant teamwork be enough to get rid of all the Byouma in the world?
#1 – Vagabond バガボンド (1998 – Present)
While there has been trillions of anime about Sengoku era there has not really been any anime like Vagabond, which has already been running for almost 20 years now. I’m very surprised that this hasn’t been adapted into an anime yet given the fact of how much source material there is and also the series is rather well received and rated.
The manga has sold 82 million copies worldwide by now. He is also the creator of the famous Basketball manga Slam Dunk. (By Takehiko Inoue)
Growing up in the late 16th century Sengoku era Japan, Shinmen Takezō is shunned by the local villagers as a devil child due to his wild and violent nature. Running away from home with a fellow boy at age 17, Takezo joins the Toyotomi army to fight the Tokugawa clan at the Battle of Sekigahara. However, the Tokugawa win a crushing victory, leading to nearly three hundred years of Shogunate rule. Takezo and his friend manage to survive the battle and afterwards swear to do great things with their lives. However, after their paths separate, Takezo becomes a wanted criminal and must change his name and his nature in order to escape an ignoble death.
Honorable Mentions; Dr. Stone, 7Seeds, 20th Century Boys, Lucifer & Biscuit Hammer, Rabbit Doubt, Red River, Cage Of Eden, +Anima & Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko!
While you may not agree with my list, lets hope at least something out of these get turned into an Anime at some point. If you have manga that you want to see turned into anime leave a comment below 🙂
